We know that media are wrong in our field of expertise; yet on other topics we trust them [Gell-Mann Amnesia Effect]

Experts forget how badly their own subject is treated in media and believe that subjects they don’t know much about are treated more competently by the same media. [Gell-Mann Amnesia Effect.]

“You turn the page, and forget what you know.”

Lies by media, police, politicians are treated as “isolated incidents” of misinformation, not of wholesale dishonesty and systemic bias1.

Outside our personal expertise, we don’t have enough knowledge to oppose and resist the constant barrage of misinformation and bias.

I) A biology expert is fully aware that James Watson of DNA Nobel fame was object of a world wide witch hunt. That James Watson was totally right2 to be “`inherently gloomy about the prospect of Africa` because `all our social policies are based on the fact that their intelligence is the same as ours—whereas all the testing says not really.` 3. This same biology expert faithfully believes that otherwise MSM are honest and Breitbart, Fox, Vdare spread lies and conspiracy theories. He refuses to entertain the idea that  BLM (Black Lives Matter) is built upon a series of lies, on mostly debunked allegations of police brutality built upon blatantly manipulative media omissions and distortions 4*5. It seems too hard to believe that our ”free” media are unashamedly lying to us whole-sale. Strangely, we don’t apply the popular adage:
Fool me once, shame on you, Fool me twice, shame on me!

  1. The Racism Exception to Civilized and Honest Behavior #1: Media 6
  2. Deception normalized, violence justified. The Racism exception to civilized and honest behavior #27
  3. Fool me twice, shame on me! is not applied. People are unaware of the wholesale #License2Lie for the purpose of anti-racism and “social justice”
  4. Postmodernism: Denial of Objective Reality and of Facts is a license to deny and lie

II) A policeman from Rotherham has first hand knowledge about the incredible cruelty caused by the coverup8 of Muslim grooming rape gangs in Rotherham9. In spite of the awareness of media coverup and lies in Rotherham, this same policeman still believes in media lies about unjustified police brutality in the USA comitted against innocent unarmed Black for no reason whatsoever.

III) Everyone is an expert on their own local issues. Local residents are aware that media do cover up minority violence by Blacks and Muslims in the street, in stores, shopping centers. They are aware that teachers, school boards embellish and ignore mobbing and School Bullying Terror10 by “underprivileged minority” youth. They know about their city’s no=go-zones in “minority” neighborhoods. They believe their experiences are isolated incidents, unaware that it is a world wide trend and happens everywhere, not just in their local school and neighborhood.

Laws of credulity:

    1. Everyone is conservative about what he knows best. Robert Conquest’s First Laws of Politics
      1. The same person often advocates government regulations in areas in which they are ignorant and opposes them in areas where they have knowledge. [Vodnoy Paradox]11
    2. We know media are wrong in our field of expertise, yet on other topics we trust them [Gell-Mann Amnesia Effect]12
    3. the same person often advocates government regulations in areas in which they are ignorant and opposes them in areas where they have knowledge13. I call this the “Vodnoy Paradox.” [Source]
    4.  Any organization not explicitly right-wing sooner or later becomes left-wing [O’Sullivan] [Robert Conquest]:14

“Briefly stated, the Gell-Mann Amnesia effect is as follows. You open the newspaper to an article on some subject you know well. In Murray’s case, physics. In mine, show business. You read the article and see the journalist has absolutely no understanding of either the facts or the issues. Often, the article is so wrong it actually presents the story backward — reversing cause and effect. I call these the “wet streets cause rain” stories. Paper’s full of them.

In any case, you read with exasperation or amusement the multiple errors in a story, and then turn the page to national or international affairs, and read as if the rest of the newspaper was somehow more accurate about Palestine than the baloney you just read. You turn the page, and forget what you know.”
Michael Crichton [Gell-Mann Amnesia Effect]

In a speech in 2002, Crichton coined the term Gell-Mann amnesia effect. He used this term to describe the phenomenon of experts believing news articles on topics outside of their fields of expertise, even after acknowledging that articles written in the same publication that are within the experts’ fields of expertise are error-ridden and full of misunderstanding. He explains the irony of the term, saying it came about “because I once discussed it with Murray Gell-Mann, and by dropping a famous name I imply greater importance to myself, and to the effect, than it would otherwise have”.[14] [Source: Gell Mann Amnesia Effect|Wikipedia]

So the Hunt Assumption Amnesia Corollary is when experts start reading a paper, note that they disagree with some basic assumptions of the work, but keep reading and accept the conclusions, forgetting they had rejected the assumptions. This effect is rife in Addiction Medicine, and, I suspect, much of academia. [A New Corollary to the Gell-Mann Amnesia Effect.]

  8. School Bullying Terror
Interracial school bullying is covered up, not prevented. Vulnerable children of all races are forced into schools without protection against violence and rape by “historically underprivileged” youth.

  9. The Vodnoy Paradox

Government regulations sound plausible in areas where we know little and have thought less. But usually those who know an area well can tell us of the unexpected harmful consequences of seemingly plausible and well-intentioned regulations. As a result, the same person often advocates government regulations in areas in which they are ignorant and opposes them in areas where they have knowledge. I call this the “Vodnoy Paradox.” [Source]

The Vodnoy Paradox sounds very similar to Robert Conquest’s First Law of Politics: “Everyone is conservative about what he knows best.” There is some doubt about whether Robert Conquest was the author of the “Three Laws of Politics” ascribed to him, but I suggest his First Law goes some way to explaining why we see the behaviour labelled as the Vodnoy Paradox and even removes the element of paradox in the behaviour.

For the record, Robert Conquest’s Three Laws of Politics are:

Everyone is conservative about what he knows best.
Any organization not explicitly right-wing sooner or later becomes left-wing.
The simplest way to explain the behavior of any bureaucratic organization is to assume that it is controlled by a cabal of its enemies. [Source: Comment]
